Except that it wasn't simply an act of rage against the dog - he wasn't angry at the dog, he was angry at it's owner because she had irritated him over a traffic incident , and he wanted to torture her by killing her dog in front of her. And it was not his first incident - he had previously beaten a dog that irked him , to death with a bat - and again , in front of other people. This man has frightening rages - and he's not afraid of who witnesses his rage. Agree that the hiearchy of crime and punishment is disjointed... but it's not a reason to let this man go on to new and better. I asked our D.A. about the lax sentencing in crimes against children , and his reply was , " Would you rather we put the children through more torment in front of a courtroom of people to avenge what happened to them ? Sometimes we have to do what we think is best for the child to get on with their lives . Each case is judged by what we think the child is capable of tolerating. Some children do not have the emotional stamina of reliving these events over and over." I don't know - I wasn't really happy with that - but it did give me something more to think about.
