We know what should be,

The problem is that we have several "should be"s and they conflict.

One should be is that every child abuser should be punished for her crime.

(Gee, I sometimes it's fun being literarily liberated!)

But another should be is that the innocent should not be punished for something they didn't do.

Another should be is that every accused should have the right to challenge all aspects of the evidence against her.

These should bes conflict when the purported victim is a child.
