<<As you recall, Westell was pushing a competing xDSL technology (CAP) as the de facto standard over Amati's DMT as the de jure standard>>

I remembered it well. It was analog vs digital. Digital (DMT) had the technological advantage. However, CAP proponents said it was good enough for home use and actually landed some early contracts.

CLECs are still dragging their feet if you ask me in implementing xDSL. We were looking for fiber to the curb back in 1996 in a couple of years. Here we are, 2001, where are they? For locations that are out of range (1.5 miles?), CLECs have no intentions to upgrade them. I guess the cost is just too much to make it worthwhile. DSL providers are small resellers which are going down like fireflies. One of these days someone will emerge to reap the benefits of all these enabling technologies. The question is, who?
