One can assert that pets are more than property without implying that they are equal to children
Of course.
I'm not sure why but I feel frustrated. As if I'm forced into defending some position that I don't hold and never took.

As a parent, I find any comparison of pets to children ridiculous, right or wrong. It has nothing to do with how much I love animals or how appalled I am by the evil roadrage maniac; it is not a judgment of some sort on people loving animals, I love mine. That woman bugged me in her extremeness- I was careful to say she bugged ME, not that she was right or wrong or shouldn;t FEEL that way. We have the feelings, but we also have to use judgment about acting on the feelings. Her demand for ten years was extreme, just as his acting on his rage was extreme.
