re: DOS/WIndows Dave do you really understand what you are talking about? If Microsoft had removed 'DOS dependency" "years ago" you would have cried foul when all the Legacy DOS based programs ceased to work. Microsoft has done a pretty good job in balancing the old with the new. It is too bad they can't carve out the cancerous legacy stuff when they want to, but that's what happens when you try to support your customer base...
