Dear John G,

Usenet is one of the common ways that professional "spammers" get your mail address. Another source is mailing lists like AOL's buddy list or within EarthLink we use to post our members email addresses with their personal web sites. I don't think that many "spammers" pay for lists.

As for Spam originating from EarthLink ... we have always operated a open architected e-mail system. An integral part of this included "relaying" messages that came to our mail servers that had gotten "lost" on to their correct owners. "spammers" would forge headers where it looked like the messages originated from EarthLink and relay those messages through our servers. This was at the heart of the dispute with Cyber Promotions. They not only are sending these unsolicited pieces of mail ... they were also trying to cover their tracks and point folks to us. Because of this we have had to install a modification to our mail system which no longer supports this mail feature. This was an instance where our good intentions turned out to bite us in the end. These "spammers" aren't even customers of EarthLink, they were just taking advantage of our architecture.

The best way to combat spam is to send a response back to the organization that sent the unsolicited mail and tell them to take you off the list. Also, send a response to your ISP asking them to take action concerning this matter.

I think prospectively you will see very little, in the way of "forged headers" from and EarthLink mailing address. I hope this answers your question.
