The "Godawful things back home" would actually be a takeover by a group like the Shining Path. Again, it's a matter of who's side you are on in a war, not that the war can be made somehow pretty. Fortunately, that war's over, and your side lost. You'll just have to learn to deal with the preservation of liberty...
