More problems for Getty?

Just a note to let investors know that Getty Images could soon be having some trouble with its suppliers. Getty recently issued a contract that it expects all Getty photographers to sign by the end of July. The problem is that the new contract is decidedly unfriendly to photographers -- so much so that about 500 Getty photogs have banded together in a group called Stock Artists Alliance (SAA). SAA has hired an attorney to try to negotiate with Getty Images. While Getty has recently improved its contract offer somewhat, the company and SAA are still miles apart on important issues. Getty management has said it will not allow photographers to sign after the July 31 deadline, which could leave the company without many of its most experienced shooters. The photographers’ group estimates that SAA members account for about $80 million in Getty sales each year. If the SAA photographers leave, it will be difficult for Getty Images to keep up its supply of fresh photography. And the advertising and design community, upon which Getty Images relies, can be very fickle. Advertising art directors and buyers can very quickly drop companies that do not meet current needs.

For the record, this poster is an SAA member.
