I agree with you that we can conserve at least 20 % if not more. Personally I conserve 50 %. Become a vegetarian and conserve even more. However you have to look at it from a world wide perspective. Here in California we are asking that out poor have air-conditioning while the rest of the world is wondering if they will live to see the morning. Even if we conserve the conservation is negated by the flood of immigrants both legal and illegal. Conservation does not fill the demand for cheap medicine, rescuing the world from an Aids crisis and looking for a better future for mankind. Do you think that slowing growth will give us the wealth to have a health-care system that is legit ? While I have been in California (1987) the population of California has exploded but not one new reservoir was created to satisfy the demands. You praise Bill CLinton but what did he do to ensure the future of this country ? The government took in massive amounts of tax dollars but they put very little back into the infra-structure. We have floods in one part of this country and droughts in another. Why don't they create an infra-structure that traps the excess water and redistributes it as needed ? The answer is that Bill CLinton and GW will spend all their time getting re-elected. The truth is that the politicians don't solve the problems they get in the way. How many times have you heard the praise of divided government ? DO you understand that there are over 50,000 pages allotted to rules covering the sale of cabbage ?
If you can't see this what type of Spirit are you referring to ? The AMerican Spirit is a spirit of the individual not the group. This is the true meaning of American culture it is the worth of the individual
