Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT - news) plans to support the MP3 file format, but as an add-on that users of the upcoming Windows XP (news - web sites) will have to download for an undisclosed price, say reports.
Yawn. As the article said, only diehard Microsoft nutters will pay for the MS add-on when there are free alternatives available. Support in this context means ripper software for making MP3 files. As far as playing MP3 files, there are even more free alternatives. I favor WinAMP over RealPlayer because it is not cluttered up with irritating ads.
