I agree with the comments about insensitive remarks-

At the same time I wouldn't come down too hard on the people that make them. It is so hard to know what to say, when you become involved in another's tragedy. We went to a wake for a teenager (good friend's daughter) who was run over by a tour bus at a rest stop, with her mother a chaperone on the bus. Whatever we mumbled to her tear-streaked face as we passed in the line, it may well have been awful. I cut these people a lot of slack for getting it wrong on such occasions.
