Proximus Sees Possible Delay In 3G Network Rollout
Dow Jones Newswires

July 17, 2001

BRUSSELS -- Belgian mobile telecommunication group Proximus Tuesday said handset and network component availability could lead to a delay in the rollout of its third-generation mobile telecommunications services.

Proximus, which is 25%-owned by Vodafone PLC (VOD) and 75%-owned by Belgium's former telecom monopoly, Belgacom SA (B.BCM), said complications with acquiring building permits for base stations could also contribute to a delay in the 3G rollout.

"This could impact the rollout calendar for the network and the actual launch of commercial services," Proximus said in a statement.

Proximus was one of three incumbent mobile operators to secure a license in early March to build a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, or UMTS, network. The other license holders are KPN Orange Belgium NV and Mobistar NV (B.MSR), which is 51% controlled by France Telecom (FTE).

Under government rules, license holders must start offering 3G services by September 2002.

Despite the uncertainties with handset and network component availability, Proximus said it intends to launch 3G services within 18 months of having secured its 3G license.

Proximus also said it has chosen three mobile equipment manufacturers, Nokia Corp. (NOK), L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. (ERICY) and Siemens AG (SI), to conduct tests for its 3G network.
