There is also the fact that a 1GHZ PIII is as fast as 1.4GHZ P4.

Much of the market doesn't realize that, but most of the market buys whatever's cheap, anyway. Users interested in high end machines are becoming suspicious and confused by PIII, P4, Athlon, and Athlon4 benchmarks being so different for chips of the same MHZ.

So they hang on to their dollars.
