ROCKY HILL, Conn., Jul 17, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Ames Department Stores, Inc.
(NASDAQ: AMES) announced today the introduction of its two-pronged Tax-Rebate
promotion. In effect July 22 through September 29, 2001, Ames' efforts are
designed to help customers maximize their buying power; a reminder to customers
that the retailer is committed to being their partner through these tough
economic times.

For Ames, the promotions will help build store traffic while putting extra cash
in their customers' hands.

For Tax-Rebate check recipients within Ames' operating area, Ames is offering a
Check Cashing Discount Program. The program combines free check cashing of IRS
tax-rebate checks when making a qualifying purchase at Ames with a 10% discount
off the total purchase. According to Joseph R. Ettore, Ames' chairman and chief
executive officer, "Ames recognizes that to many of our customers these checks
are more than a just a windfall. They represent the opportunity to finally move
forward with some long put-off purchases. Our intention is to help them stretch
these dollars even further."

In addition to merchandise discounts, Ames will be running a Rebate Card
Sweepstakes open to all customers, even those who did not receive a rebate
check. Each of Ames' participating 450 stores is assured of one sweepstakes
winner of a rebate card. Cards will be valued at $50, $100, $300 or $600.
Chainwide, Ames will issue $50,000 in Rebate Cash Cards. Winners at each store
will be selected by random drawing during the week of October 1, 2001.

Both programs are examples of the Company's new approach to marketing and
promotion initiatives aimed to refresh their core business concept of offering
quality merchandise at great values.
