Bottoms up for Boy George

Headline: Protesters plan to bare bottoms for Bush

Tuesday July 17, 2001

Thousands of environmental protesters are planning a "mass mooning" of American president George Bush when he makes his first official visit to the UK on Thursday.

The coordinated bottom-baring is part of a 48-hour long "unwelcoming" protest planned to coincide with the president's flying visit to Britain.

The move - by a coalition of climate change protestors including Friends of the Earth, Globalise Resistance and the Green party - will take place in Trafalgar Square as the president makes his way to the British Museum and the Cabinet War Rooms.

Other actions include an all-night vigil outside the US embassy to demonstrate against America's vetoing of the Kyoto agreement on climate change, and protests outside the US ambassador's residence in Regent's Park, central London.

President Bush flies into the UK tomorrow evening, ahead of the G8 talks in Genoa at the weekend.

He will be welcomed by Tony Blair and meet the Queen, before being taken on Thursday to the the prime minister's official residence at Chequers.

The Campaign against Climate Change will also parade a model of a globe within a greenhouse to demonstrate the effects of global warming.

The ongoing climate change conference in Bonn is seen as the last chance to save the Kyoto agreement now the US has pulled the plug on its environmental pledges.
