Jefferies comments on fiber industry

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shares of companies in the fiber-optics business are in decline, as the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference held in Baltimore last week failed to provide a lasting catalyst for the group. "Overall, industry trends remained soft in the current quarter due to tight capital spending budgets and a capacity glut in inventory," commented Joseph Bellace, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. He added that the industry is generally expected to recover in the June 2002 quarter. Among companies in the sector, JDS Uniphase is sliding $1.03 to $10.86, Nortel Networks is losing 46 cents to $8.06, Corning is easing 21 cents to $14.33, Ciena is slipping $1.22 to $32.99 and Sycamore Networks is falling 42 cents to $7.57
