I dislike the Stranger and I didn't re-read it for this discussion. I find it deeply disturbing- because I am an empathetic humanist. In this book there is no hope. It is like being in the mind of madness. It is an alien and hopeless (imo)landscape- because madness IS being the "other". That's the whole definition. If you are sane and all the world is "crazy" the you really are the crazy one- because sanity and madness are referenced by the norm, the average, the general population. That isn't to say we can't be quietly the "other" in our heads- but when you start to act it out- as in this book- you WILL be punished, excessively.

I prefer the Plague because in that book I find hope.
