Did Meursault really find 'meaning in every moment'? I had the feeling he just took sensual pleasure from life, but nothing beyond that. Sort of like my cat stretching in the sun. nothing had any 'inner significance' which is the way I think of meaning.
And he certainly didn't assign moral values to actions or events- nothing was good or bad, although he did do what was expected by the establishment- so he accepted that kind of external structure.

I think I miss much because I don't know anything about the psychology of Europe after the war, and I certainly don't know the French (for instance I came across some reference to the Arab being considered an inferior race and so the crime wasn't exactly what it seems to us).

I saw Caligula performed probably 30 ago and can still remember being very unsettled by it.
