Open question re: the VIX

Does the VIX reading tend to get skewed in any way as we near options expiry? I ask cuz I noticed that the VIX actually went up a fraction (okay, a decimal or two, but a fraction sounds better) even though the market was up pretty strongly. Ya, I know there's no hard and fast link, but this has not been the pattern of late. Could it be people buying/selling puts and calls to roll into months farther out? Or could it be nothing at all?
