For a few years I worked for a small software company that sold a sophisticated inventory control program..

I got to know the manual very well.

At least 2/3 of the questions people called in with could be answered with "if you follow the directions on page ### of the manual, which addresses exactly that question, you should be fine."

There was almost always a dead silence on the other end of the line. Most times, that was followed by a click. Occasionally, I would get a "Uh, but I can't FIND the manual." Very few people admitted that they should have read the manual before calling.
