Keeping the thread alive,
I have noticed for a long time, to put it politely, that the the Noisiest of the Noice, or the most Pompous of the Pompous, or the most Boring of the Boring,,on SI seem to have the least to say with substance,... Why? I think, they have never taken the time to live..
How can you write about something? if you have not experienced it? Sure as hell not by reading about it, or watching a movie about it, By observing, maybe, a little, but I am pretty sure most of these people, have never got close enough to observe things of interest... To do that, you have to drag yourself away from: now the computer, before a book or movie, or if they would admit it, the TV...
So everything, all the icons of SI get I would venture is 2nd or 3rd hand.. So their expertise is dependent upon things looking through someone else's eyes.. And maybe they are the "expert of the obvious" of interpretating someone else's work.. Why don't they try it on their own? Rather than pretending to try out for a staff writer for TV guide or being a movie critic for People magazine.
I remember a classic author once saying, I don't remember who, saying, "You can't write about something well, unless you have experienced it".. Think about it, All the great emotions of life, happiness, sadness, love, passion, courage, fear, etc. can only be written about correctly unless the writer has been out there.. exposed to it..
