The Northern Lights are best seen midwinter on moonless nights. It's rare to see them in the summer, as it's pretty light even at midnight. I saw the northern lights in July once from my lookout in Idaho, but I've never seen them in the summer in Alaska. That's not to say they can't be seen.

There is no comparison at all between fireworks and the northern lights. The former triggers excitement; the latter awe and wonder of the most profound kind.
