Someone explain what was so good about INTC's earnings. I found the following really confusing. How can INTC put a positive spin on that ?

For the first half of 2001, Intel earned $681 million, or 10 cents per share, on sales of $13 billion. Those figures all dropped from the first half of 2000, when net profit was $5.8 billion, or 83 cents per share, on sales of $16.3 billion.

Ok. Again. I don't understand the huge discrepancy ? First half of 2001, $681 million on sales of $13 billion. First half of 2000, $5.8 billion, or 83 cents per share, on sales of $16.3 billion.
