Andreas,

"I really hope that AMD optimized it for clock-speed not IPC. It needs to be introduced at >3.0GHz for AMD to stay competitive."

I remember that earlier this year AMD officials said that Hammer will be introduced at three times the clock speed of the original Athlon when it was introduced back in 1999. That would mean a 1.8 - 2.0 GHz Hammer introduction. That would definitely not be enough, no matter how powerful the Hammer might be.

I fear that AMD is loosing momentum right now. Let's hope that the Crush chipset will come soon and bring AMD back into the game. Let's also hope that the low performance i845 chipset will backfire and create something like a "Celeron-effect". OTOH: If i845 is only less than 10% slower than i850, as early benchmarks indicate, this might go almost unnoticed by the public. Then Intel can play the MHz game plain and simple.
