Under the Jeffersonian view, the authoritarianism you envision was merely remanded to the individual states. There was no guarantee against despotism. Thus, slavery was established, with the expectation it would be honored through reciprocity throughout the Union (as in the Dred Scott case), and whites were forbidden to teach slaves to read. Additionally, in the first years of the Republic, each state had the right to establish a church, or to curtail freedom of the press, or to define sedition in broad and obnoxious terms. Even in the remonstrance against the Alien and Sedition Act, the complaint was not that it was uncomformable to the precepts of liberty, but that the power of the states was being arrogated.........
