In-N-Out Burger / Krispy Kreme parallels -- two interesting thoughts have come up (both not from me, by the way) :

My friend David made the following comments to me (in an e-mail) :

I&O is exactly like Krispy Kreme.

1. Cult following.
2. Catchy image (generated at youth).
3. Regional flavor. (when I was a kid, it was Coors beer)
4. People willing to wait an extraordinarily long time for fresh grub.

At the recently opened I&O on Ventura Blvd. in Encino, the line of cars is out of the property, and down the street. The location set up for long lines, and can be seen from the freeway.

People love a busy place !

The free "buzz" of an I.P.O. would explode growth.

And from a certain relative of mine :

He brought up the idea of -- management of In-N-Out Burger may have decided to finally take their company public (and -- expand the chain beyond three states out in the West) ...

(after decades of private ownership) (and a comment in their website (proudly) stating : "In-N-Out remains privately owned and the Snyder family has no plans to take the company public or franchise any units.") ...

possibly because they (In-N-Out management) have witnessed the success of Krispy Kreme (doing more or less the exact same thing).

Jon.
