Only time for a quick post until this evening. Almost got done re-reading The Stranger last night until my wife made me put out the light. Something Maria wouldn't have done to Meursault!

A few questions maybe to start discussion juices flowing.

1. What is the symbolism of the sun in the beach scene? I don't have the book here so can't quote precisely, but I was struck by the way he credits or blames the sun for taking a very active role in pushing him forward, as though it were an animate force. It must mean something, but I don't know what.

2. Maybe this will be answered in the last 20 pages, but who is the Stranger? Meursault? The Arab? And to what group is he a stranger? To society at large? To Arab society? To us? To himself?

I had a third question on my mind as I went to sleep, but forget it now. It'll come to me.

Still deep in trial preparation, so no time for more. I'll be back tonight!
