jpdunwell - I have no rational basis to say this, but there's a little man in the back of my head that says that the supposedly "free market" west would never let its hallowed stock markets collapse at this point in history, and would do everything in their power to prevent it.

I don't have a problem with INDU 8000 actually, but giving Naz 2000 buyers another 50% haircut could really rock some foundations close to home. Printing money to maintain price levels is a far preferable alternative, even if it means we go nowhere net-net-net for a long while, and that seems to be what we're seeing.

I guess it comes down to whther you believe the government intercedes in markets (the notorious PP), and whether you believe they fear what a big washout would do to the people's confidence and all that would flow from a loss of that confidence.

I know I sure don't want to go back to the impotent Iranian hostage situation atmosphere. I'm of the opinion the government doesn't either, and that they are practicing their "soft landing" techniques on equities. Too bad none of us will ever know for sure, it would make a series of best sellers.
