Whether Hill was credible or not, I think there's little question that she was dug up and put forward by a very organized group who considered themselves ardent feminists. Certain liberal groups, including some feminist groups, were very upset about Thomas's judicial record, but were wary of attacking a black. So there was an active search for any dirt on Thomas anybody could find that wouldn't appear racist. As I recall the story, Hill wasn't interested in getting involved until some very influential feminists talked her into it.

If this recollection of the history is accurate, whether or not her story was credible, she was put forward as a feminist standard bearer for feminist political purposes.
