ABCNEWS>......Frist's announcement today is significant because he is a close ally of the White House. A spokeswoman said, however, that the senator did not consult the president or his advisers before declaring his support for federal funding.

The Tennessee Republican became the latest entry on a growing list of Republicans who oppose abortion, but support funding for embryonic stem-cell research. That list includes Sens. Hatch, John McCain of Arizona, Gordon Smith of Oregon, Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, former Sen. Connie Mack of Florida, Rep. Randy Cunningham of California and Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson.

Dozens of GOP lawmakers who support abortion rights have also signaled their support for government funding. A spokesman for the Republican Main Street Partnership — a coalition of 60 moderate Republican House and Senate members that earlier this month wrote the president urging him to permit funding — says representatives of the group will meet privately with Bush political adviser Karl Rove and White House chief of staff Andy Card next week to discuss the issue.

Bush is expected to announce his decision soon after he returns from his trip to Europe next week. If the president does not give the green light to federally funded stem-cell research, a number of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have pledged to push legislation that will.
