I generally concur w/your financial assessment for the "other" businesses. However, uP growth is slowing and last I heard was projected to be in the 8-9% range. Thus, staying in the cpu biz. will not provide enough growth to justify intc's current/historical P/E. Thus this push into new businesses is a must from a corporate perspective in order to maintain the healthy historical growth rate/stock appreciation of yesteryear.

I believe the real issue with "other businesses" is intc's conservative acq. strategy to grow same, which forbids acquiring top-notch tech. companies such as VIA or BRCM or a host of other top-tier tech. to provide real leadership in new sectors.
