A CAFE increase seems certain when the current act expires this fall. The Nat Acad Sci report ought to help our cause. Is GM going to put in-line 5s on 80% of trucks & SUV? Would that boost mpg by three? That's the increase above the current CAFE 20.7 mpg that apparently would satisfy the proposal being floated in congress to save five billion gallons of gas by year 2010. From a front page article in today's WSJ : "Congressional officials, however, say that amendment will probably be toughened, ...'Somewhere near 30 to 35 is where I think the majority of the House is,' say Rep Joe Barton, the Texas Republican who heads the energy subcommittee."

30 to 35?! Not by variable valve timing and/or cylinder shutdown and/or in-line engines, etc....seems DFI might be needed to reach those target levels. Right?

So let's hope a significant increase in CAFE is in the cards and that we see a phase in by model year 2004. The current CAFE freeze is in effect until MY 2003.

Changing the topic. Pierre posted a link to Siemen's HDPI on the club board. It struck me as odd that Siemens
was claiming that "the Siemens system yields significant fuel economy gains resulting from improved cylinder wall wetting." Hmmmm. I wasn't aware that wall wetting was a selling point. I'm thinking that that was one of HDPI's drawbacks...and one clear advantage OE's DI had over any high pressure system.
