The turmoil you adduce has been in pursuit of social homogeneity, and each side is pretty free with censorship. You are right, the use of the phrase "of European background" was a mistake, but I had been more precise earlier: emigres, including those who had been in the States for many years, have often shown this tendency to fear that much overt criticism would incite to turmoil. In other words, they often have difficulty believing that the social cost of strong disagreement is worth it, partly, I suppose, because of the ease with which their societies have slid into chaos in this century. I have, in fact, known quite a few emigres.....
