Bad analogy. The blacks forcibly taken to America in chains were enslaved. Archaeological digs in the area of ancient Babylon have turned up evidence that that the Jews in the Babylonian exile were not enslaved, but in fact led comfortable, upper-middle-class lives. (The Jews that were carted off to Babylon after the destruction of Jerusalem were the intelligentsia. Hence, it would not have made any sense for the Babylonians to mistreat the people they needed to run the government bureaucracy.) The faction led by Ezra and Nehemiah that returned to Jerusalem were ultra-right-wingers. It is only about this time, actually, that the notion of Israel as a unified state of God's chosen people really takes hold, and that the idea of a single God ... as opposed to numerous gods ... also becomes the dominant theology.
