They were available then as well.
The gun culture rose at the end of the Civil War. There were a lot of murders, robberies, and the like at that time.

30 years ago guns were much more expensive than they are today. I know my dad bought a revolver for about $125 in 1969 and I've seen similar weapons for sale new at about $100. This is after many years of significant inflation. The tough kids when I grew up couldn't afford such a weapon.
