The difference?

transmeta.com
transmeta.com

x86 compatible

Speed.. up to approx PIII 700 megaherz

Minimal power usage which keeps the heat down and negates the need for a cooling fan.

The only problem is that the chip is probably still a might expensive for a sub-$200 box. However, were we to see some success with Version 5, there shouldn't be any reason that Version 6 couldn't incorporate the Crusoe chip.

266Mghz isn't bad for a web appliance. But if you want to see your box used for internet gaming or downloading big video files (pay per view DVD movies), they it will need a faster processor and a PIII 500-700 megahertz should more than suffice.

The nice thing is that Transmeta is under intense pressure to boost revenues. That suggests that they might be obliged to "cut a deal" sometime down the road, in exchange for volume purchases.

And since the National Semiconductor connection is already established with either company, I don't see why it would be such a leap of logic.
