Jerusalem was destroyed by the Babylonians because the King of Judea bet on the losing side in one of many Middle East power struggles.

Archaeological evidence shows that even though Jerusalem was destroyed, it was "life as usual" in villages just a few miles from Jerusalem. The notion that the Babylonians murdered 3/4 of the inhabitants of Israel is nonsense.
