DJN: DJ Gateway Results -3: Lowers 2H Guidance >GTW
(Dow Jones 07/19 13:50:38)

Gateway Inc. (GTW) expects to break even on a pretax basis, excluding
special charges, for the second half of 2001, based on current market
conditions and outlook.
The guidance is a departure from April's projection for a return to
profitability in the second half of the year, as well as unit sales that top
year-ago results.
Analysts currently expect the company to report earnings per share of 11
cents a share in the third quarter and 21 cents a share in the fourth
quarter.
The personal computer maker expects unit volume to rise sequentially over
the next two quarters, although it may not meet last year's levels.
During the third quarter of 2001, Gateway estimates pretax special charges
ranging from $25 million to $30 million related to strategic restructuring.
In April, the company said it would record a $25 million pretax charge iin
the second quarter and a $10 million pretax charge in the third quarter,
both related to the restructuring of retail and international activities.
