In a display of good journalism, the Washington Post reported that an important stem-cell study was changed at the last minute by scientists hoping to lessen the political impact of research that cast doubt on the stability of stem cells. The Post found that the scientists who wrote the report deleted a sentence about the possible challenges created by the instability of stem cells and replaced it with a sentence emphasizing the therapeutic promise of the cells. The Post interviewed the lead researcher of the report who admitted that genetic instability in human embryonic stem cells could complicate efforts to turn the cells into cures. He also admitted that he did not mention the potential problems because he was afraid those who oppose the research would exaggerate it. The scientists, afraid of losing funding for their research, changed their findings to hide serious doubts from a concerned public.

"If the White House isn't allowed to engage in politics, then surely scientists should steer away from it," commented the National Review Online. "As the [New York] Times says today [July 6], 'There can be no room for playing politics on an issue that will affect people's lives.'"
