Re: They feel Windows XP and the "normal 3 year refresh cycle" will converge to result in a pickup in 2002. There is a lot of concern over XP. If Microsoft forces it to be the only OS OEMs can ship, it helps Microsoft quite a bit in terms of locking in a higher and more continuous revenue stream. It doesn't seem to do much of anything for endusers. IT departments are going to wonder why they need to pay Microsoft for the privilege of seeing a substantial increase in their support issues as XP periodically locks up due to a perceived configuration change. Adding memory to a machine, replacing a bad network or video card, installing software with copy protection, etc. can cause the OS software to lock out its user until support staff can get someone from Microsoft on the line and convince them that the particular installation is a legitimate one. Obviously, upgrading or replacing a user's hard disk goes from being an aggravating problem to an even worse problem. XP is as likely to delay or eliminate sales as it is to improve them.
