Digital satellite broadcasters agree to adopt common receivers
nikkei.co.jp

PerfecTV, DirecTV and JSkyB have agreed to use common receivers to enable households to pick up the signals of all three digital satellite broadcasters. Viewers will be able to switch between the services they have subscribed to, with the device also tracking pay-per-view access. The agreement was announced Monday by Shuji Kusuda, head of the broadcasting administration bureau of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

The common equipment may hit the market as early as next year.

PerfecTV has already started broadcasting, while DirecTV will begin service this autumn and JSkyB next spring.

The control element will likely add only several hundred yen to the cost of a receiver.
