Realtors aren't good customers because the dang brokers take the shots (you've seen how lousy the pictures are -g-) except in the luxury market where they do brochures. A lot of brokers use digital now since the listings are moving to computer based listings.

Ryland was my only big shack builder, but I did a lot of work for architects and developers (always dicey working for developers because they have this tendency to go out of business and re-surface under a new name leaving you with a big worthless receivable). Ryland was great, like printing money, until they became such a big client. I found myself constantly in a meeting to try to resolve one problem or another (I hate meetings). Plus they tended to figure out the very best price points and then push you for more (the law of diminishing returns at work). The stuff was so boring to print that I was the only one who could a decent job because my art school trained assistants tended to turn up their noses at that kind of stuff.

Now they go to digital from the chromes so there's no work for someone like me. I do B&W film and prints, color prints and digital output. They do a lot of digital work on the pictures but they get a pure digital shop to do it. Lots of brown patches on green lawns that need cloning. I do remember one really stupid shoot where there was snow (can't sell a house with snow on the lawn-it's always a sunny day in Ryland town) and the gal from the company brought potted flowers to put out on the front so when they cloned a green lawn on there they'd have flowers up against the house.

The photographer (my original client) and I used to joke that we were both able to buy real houses selling these shacks (they are really constructed so cheaply). After a while there wasn't enough money in the world for me to want to do that kind of work. Right after I came to that decision the market cratered and they cut back the photography budget severely. There is always a danger in being a small vendor working for a large company and you sure don't want to be a big line item when they need to cut back.
