I did not say that we have not lost rights. Every time we cannot do something we had previously been at liberty to do, we lose a right, in some sense. I said our rights had not been trashed.

We have gained rights, too. For example, many people have the right to vote who did not originally. For another, the indigent have the right to an attorney appointed by the court. There is a universal right to schooling through the 12th grade, barring expulsion, which did not exist in the 19th century. Laws against miscegenation have been struck down, and therefore I have a right to marry outside my race (my sister- in- law is, in fact, African American). Blue laws have mostly been eliminated, and therefore I have the right to open a shop on Sunday. Restrictive covenants have been struck down, so now I have the right to live wherever I please (I am ethnically Jewish).
