You exit right and Dixie will be right in front of you. Exit # 145. The village is called McLean.

Ish, your romantic rendezvous restaurant is included in this month's Lands' End catalogue's cover story titled "Bambi's Big Adventure". Bambi is a travel trailer not to be confused in any way with our own thread leader.

The portion of the story about Dixie ....

Mile 279, the Dixie Trucker's Home, McLean, Illinois

We pull in among the big rigs. This is not a retirement home for aging truck drivers. It is a massive truck stop. A serious fueling station for tractor-trailers and the people who drive them. One of the specialties: a cinnamon roll the size of a hubcap.

Mile 280 (one hour later)

We are back on the highway. Both children are accounted for. We all wear the glazed look of the intently digesting. My lasting Dixie memory? "The Southern Special." Four pieces of fried corn mush the size of hockey stick blades, two eggs any style, four bacon strips, toast, coffee.

The entire story is at this website (click on the link just below the picture of the travel trailer on the right side of the screen) ....
