Metromedia Fiber Network Rebuilds Fire Damaged Network in Just 36 Hours With New 24,000 Foot Alternate Route NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 20, 2001--
MFN is First to Restore IP Traffic to its Network Damaged by Fire From the Train Derailment in the Howard Tunnel in Baltimore
Metromedia Fiber Network (MFN) (Nasdaq: MFNX), the leader in deployment of optical IP Internet infrastructure within key metropolitan areas domestically and internationally, replaced its fiber-optic cable that was affected by the Howard Street tunnel fire in less than 36 hours.
This effort restores MFN's network to a fully redundant state. MFN's Internet customers experienced no service interruption due to the damage or during the repairs as IP traffic had been immediately rerouted following the incident.
On Wednesday, a freight train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed and caught fire in an old railroad tunnel under Howard Street in Baltimore. The fire and hazardous materials quickly damaged the fiber-optic cables of several large carriers. MFN's field engineering team responded in record time, rerouting 24,000 feet of cable through a maze of city conduits through the center of Baltimore. MFN's network was restored to full redundancy thus allowing MFN's customers the comfort of having a fully available network back in service.
"It was immediately apparent to us that we would not be able to access our fiber in the tunnel anytime soon given the situation with the fire and hazardous materials. We immediately began looking for an alternate route we could use to fully repair our network," said Christopher Moore, Director of Operations for Metromedia Fiber Network in Baltimore. "Since our company is focused on building in metropolitan areas, we leveraged our local expertise and created a new network in record time. We are extremely proud to have accomplished this daunting task, and are even happier to call our customers with the good news."
MFN field engineers remain on-site to help the other carriers in their repairs.
