On my P&F charts on StockCharts.com, the values are the channels of the Bollinger bands and the Moving Average between them. Use them like you would Bollinger bands on bar charts.

As far as books go - Tom Dorsey's is the most easily available - and it'll teach you the basics, but was hard to read for me due to the style of writing and lack of good editing. There is a newer version out I think, maybe that one has a better editor. Other books:
