Japan-Iran deal disregards US sanctions

In another heavy blow to the US sanctions regime against Iran an 80-member Japanese economic delegation, headed by Mitsubishi CEO Nobuyuki Masuda, met on Wednesday with Iranian First Vice President Hassan Habibi and discussed issues related to the two countries' economic ties.

Japanese interest in Iran has grown following the signing last month of an agreement between the two countries to develop Iran's 26 billion-barrel Azadegan oil field. It is predicted the decision, announced by Japanese Trade Minister Takeo Hiranuma on June 8, will lead to enormous Japanese investment in Iran and sound the death knell for the US's Iran and Libya Sanctions Act of 1996, which attempted to penalize foreign companies for trading with Iran.
