Clinton's behavior patterns will keep biographers busy for many years. No one I know who has actually talked to him doubts his brilliance or his extensive knowledge.

As for Clinton's apparent need to dig himself into deep holes and then talk himself out again, a member of my family says that it is a classic pattern among the adult children of alcoholics (my family member should know; he is married to such a person). Apparently such people have to prove over and over that they "still have it", whatever that means in their particular circumstances. In Clinton's case, the ability to talk himself out of anything.

Talking to W must be a sad contrast for Tony Blair after talking to Clinton, no matter how charming W may be or how many funny stories he can tell. And forget about getting an intelligible explanation of why W is putting all America's power and prestige behind missile defense, that ridiculous idea.
