Hi Karen,

It's 2:30 here. I just woke up from a terrible nightmare-- so bad that I had to get up and try to get it out of my head.

I wonder if part of the value of reading and talking about these themes, even if we find the specific reading uninspiring, is what they add to the rest of your life-- just small things, in the same way I always was telling the boys how knowing mythology and the Bible would enrich their reading.

Two nights ago, Dan and I were watching To Kill a Mockingbird, which is one of our favorite movies, and during the courtroom scene, as I prepared to weep over Tom Robinson's conviction, I yelled out, "Oh Wow! It's just like The Stranger!". No one asked me what I meant, in fact, they ignored me. But it was. He was convicted for a "crime" unrelated to the real crime of which he was accused- that of feeling sorry for a white woman.
Tom was convicted for having human feelings, and Meursault for having none.
