This tunnel accident reminds me of two spectacular tunnel accidents in Europe in recent years, the Channel tunnel (in November 1996) and the Mont-Blanc tunnel (in March 1999)

Both were much worse, but demonstrated the need for really operational security measures in such constructions. There weren't just railway cars "glowing" with heat, there were cars that simply melted down!

I don't know what there is in the way of communications conduits in these european tunnels... does anyone?
